Summer Professional Development
Public health professionals are facing unprecedented challenges. To be happy and successful, we need to focus on self-care. Self-care means spending time on yourself to refresh, to become physically and mentally healthy so you can enjoy your work, help and care for others, and accomplish all the things you need to do every day.
When we regularly take care of ourselves, we improve our health outcomes, i.e. reduce stress, improve immune system, increase productivity, and achieve higher self-esteem. A happier, healthier you will flow into those around you.
Each course is available On-Demand. Participation is voluntary.
Course 1: Relax and Recover
June 2022
Course Description
In this course, you will learn the key skills that will help you to RELAX and RECOVER from these unprecedented times. You will assess your own resiliency and learn how to cope with the challenges we face daily. Finally, you’ll be able to use these skills to help others succeed in the game of life.

Instructional Objectives
- Knowledge
- The participant will be aware of the benefits of self-care, rejuvenation, recovery to self, students, colleagues, and others in their immediate circle of family, colleagues, and friends. The participant may or may not be aware of the toll their expenditure of professional and emotional energy has taken and may be experiencing symptoms of fatigue, stress, undesired habits, fears, phobias, anxiety, and/or physical symptoms such as headache, rash, or digestive issues.
- The participant will be able to define the stress/thought cycle, identify differences between stress, anxiety, and depression, understand the importance of mindfulness and stress management, increase capacity to effectively manage stress, discover solutions to overcome any challenge and determine appropriate responses.
- Skills
- The participant will fill their recovery and rejuvenation toolbox with many tools and skills that can be employed “in the moment” as well as long-term to manage stress, anxiety, fears, phobias, and fatigue. These tools and skills will be available to the participant for self-care as well as teachable tools for friends, family, and colleagues.
- The participant will practice practical coping strategies and be comfortable utilizing multiple stress management techniques.
- Dispositions
- The participant will be able to readily recognize when the need to employ tools from their tool kit such as mindful breathing, meditation, restorative yoga, emotional freedom technique (tapping) to address self-care needs and/or teach/share the techniques with others.
- The participant will value the importance of self-care and appreciate how it helps create happier, healthier friends, family, and colleagues.

- Daily Check-In (takes less than 2 minutes), watch weekly short duration course videos, practice techniques, submit final Participant Impact Questionnaire.
Course 2: Replenish and Rebuild
July 2022
Course Description
In this course, you will learn the key skills that will help you Replenish your emotional tank and Rebuild a solid mental foundation on which to build your future. You will learn to take stock of how you’re managing your energy and put yourself in a more powerful place because of it. You will be able to recognize when your foundation is cracked, identify the cause, and learn the how practicing self-care can repair it. Finally, you’ll be able to use these skills to help your family, friends and colleagues navigate these issues in their own lives.

In this course, you will learn the key skills that will help you to Reset your mind and Relaunch your career and life. You will learn how to let go of the past and create your future. You will be able to untangle your mind, feel more relaxed even during difficult times, and be more present in the moment. You will discover how to stay motivated and gain a new sense of control in your life. Finally, you’ll be able to use these skills to help your family, friends and colleagues navigate these issues in their own lives.

The participant may or may not be aware of the toll their expenditure of professional and emotional energy has taken and may be experiencing symptoms of fatigue, stress, undesired habits, fears, phobias, anxiety, and/or physical symptoms such as headache, rash, digestive issues.
- The participant will know how to mentally reset daily, the importance of managing their stress, and a variety of ways to get and stay motivated. The participant will understand the significance of having a sense of control in their life and how increased mental clarity impacts the ability to reach their goals. Finally, they’ll be able to use these skills to help others implement these things in their own lives.
- Skills
- The participant will be able to recognize when they need to leverage self-care to be more present in the moment, increase mental clarity, and stay motivated. They will be able to access and use tools and skills in the self-care toolbox “in the moment” as well as long-term to manage stress, anxiety, fears, phobias, and fatigue. These tools and skills will be available to the participant for self-care as well as teachable tools for friends, family, and colleagues.
- The participant will practice practical self-assessment and coping strategies and be comfortable utilizing multiple stress management techniques and ways to increase motivation.
